HOW TO EXTRACT THE FRAGRANCE OF ORANGE BLOSSOM

There are several methods for extracting a flower's fragrance. These include orange blossom water, concretes, absolutes and concentrates.

Absolute is a fragrance derived from plant matter. It's the closest thing we have to a essential oils. This is the strongest fragrance concentration. What differentiates an essential oil from a perfume absolute is the technique used to extract them.
Essential oils are obtained by hydro-distillation of the plant. Absolute quant is the material obtained by extraction using volatile solvents.

There are two methods used to obtain the absolute.

A first method consists of extracting orange blossom absolute by maceration. The plant is macerated in a volatile solvent. Once evaporated, the material is transformed into a paste, known as the concrete. This substance contains all the fragrant and oily components of the plant material. The concretes are then macerated in alcohol to solubilize them and extract all their fragrant molecules. Only after filtration is the alcohol evaporated to yield the absolute.

The second method involves transferring the odors from the raw plant material to fat. This is then washed to extract the fragrant components. The resulting alcohol is then evaporated to produce theabsolute.

Both methods are particularly time-consuming, which is why absolutes are rare and expensive.

WHAT IS ORANGE BLOSSOM?

Orange blossom is native to India and North Africa. It comes from a Bitter orange "otherwise known as Bitter orange or Citrus Aurantium which is a species of tree in the Rutaceae (citrus) family. Today, it is grown throughout the Mediterranean basin. The bigaradier is the magic tree of perfumery: everything is used, nothing is lost. Flowers, leaves, branches and fruit, each in their own way, provide multiple scents and nuances, like so many colors on their tree.

The flowers are harvested in early spring, with a second bloom in October in some cases. The flowers are traditionally picked by hand while they are still open and hanging from their branches, and then placed in baskets covered with a damp cloth to prevent them drying out. At the end of the day, the flowers are sorted to remove insects, leaves and twigs. This meticulous stage requires a great deal of patience.

ORANGE BLOSSOM: FROM TREE TO PERFUME, WHICH WAY?

Orange Blossom Absolute is obtained by direct cold extraction of the flowers of the Bitter Orange tree. Extremely precious, this Absolu is reserved for use in the finest perfumes. Its scent is floral, waxy, green, powdery, sweet, sometimes almost animalic. It is used in floral and oriental accords such as L'Heure Bleue, Fracas and Caron's Narcisse Noir.

Orange blossom essential oil or Neroli takes its name from Princess Neroli, who in the 17th century made orange blossom essence famous by using it as a perfume.
Steam distillation of brigadier flowers produces two products. The steam passes through the fresh flowers, then condenses in a coil called an alembic. At the end of the coil, two phases are obtained:

An oily phase that yields Neroli essential oil, a classic in perfumery and aromatherapy.
An aqueous phase that yields the hydrolat, or orange blossom water, used directly in lotions or pastries.
Petitgrain essence is obtained from fresh leaves and twigs by low-pressure steam distillation. Most Petitgrain essence is produced in the Grasse region. We use it mainly for beauty care.
Essence d'orange amère is produced by cold expression of the fruit peel of the Bigaradier tree. It has similar properties to Petitgrain Bigarade.

Orange blossom is part of the white flowers olfactory family. It is also very present in Hespéridés fragrances, i.e. all colognes with a characteristic scent, very close to that of the bergamot flower.

THE DIFFERENT USES OF ORANGE BLOSSOM :

1) Neroli or orange blossom essence can be used as an infusion. Simply dilute 3 or 4 drops of essential oil in a liter of lukewarm water. This herbal tea will have tranquilizing and soothing properties.

2) It can be applied locally to the inside of the wrist or the plexus to help combat insomnia and anxiety.

3) It can also be diffused in the air to sanitize a room or perfume the interior. Simply pour between 5 and 30 drops of Neroli essential oil into your diffuser and leave for 30 minutes in a living room or 15 minutes in a bedroom.

4) It can be combined with a vegetable oil and applied directly to the face for cellular stimulation.
