Perfume creation: from conception to realization

perfume creation

This autumn, two new Provençal fragrances are added to the Authentiques collection: Verveine Citronnée and Tubéreuse Étoilée. These two new fragrances are an opportunity for Panier des Sens to open its doors to you and show you behind the scenes of perfume creation.

We take you to meet Camille, a perfume evaluator in Grasse, who sheds light on the process of creating a new scent.

WHAT IS AN APPRAISER'S JOB?

The evaluator will make the link between the creative perfumer and the brand: its needs, its market, the different applications (candles, Eau de Toilette, creams...). She knows the market, the trends, but also the customer's technical constraints such as price, the cosmetic formulas in which the fragrance will be applied, etc. She guides the perfumer in his creative work and brings an outside view. She thus guides the perfumer in his creative work and provides an outside perspective.

HOW IS A PERFUME COMPOSED?

The structure of a fragrance is composed of 3 levels:

  • The top notes are the fragrance's first impression. More fresh and sparkling, they diffuse over the first few minutes after application.
  • The heart notes, also known as the body notes. They give the fragrance its character, and can be smelled for hours.
  • Finally, the base notes reveal themselves at least 3 hours after spraying. They give depth and balance to the fragrance. They can linger for several days after the heart notes have disappeared.

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU USE TO MAKE YOUR FRAGRANCES?

We have 1,500 raw materials at our disposal natural raw materials which include essential oils and absoluteas well as synthetic raw materials.

Visit the complexity of a fragrance lies in thebalance between each of these raw materials.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS USED TO OBTAIN THESE RAW MATERIALS?

Visit plant-based raw materials come from flowers, fruits, herbs, spices roots, wood and moss of various plant species. Visit essential oils are obtained by steam distillation (for lavender, for example), or by cold expression of zest for citrus fruits.

Absolutes are obtained by volatile solvent extraction (as with Orange Blossom Absolute).

IT'S DIFFICULT TO DESCRIBE HOW A FRAGRANCE FEELS, AND IT'S A VERY PERSONAL THING. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO TAKE ON BOARD THE CUSTOMER'S REQUEST AND TRANSLATE IT INTO A FRAGRANCE?

It's all about teamwork! When a new brief is issued, the creative teams get together to discuss the project. Together, with our knowledge of the market and monitoring of trends, we define the areas of work according to the sensibilities of each perfumer.

We regularly feel the work of the perfumers to validate or redirect leads throughout the project. We evaluate fragrances in real-life conditions, so as to be as close as possible to the consumer's experience, and everyone must be convinced and seduced by the fragrance before it can be validated.
