The benefits of honey in cosmetics

benefits of honey

The use of honey in cosmetics, also known as apitherapy, has many virtues for the skin. Once known as the "nectar of the gods", honey has become a key ingredient in the formulas of many cosmetic products, thanks to its naturalness and benefits. Find out everything you need to know about honey in this article!

What is apitherapy?

Apitherapy is known as the ancient technique of using all the substances produced or secreted by bees for therapeutic purposes. Pollen, honey, propolis (hive resin), royal jelly and venom are all used in a wide range of cosmetics. Each substance has its own specific virtues, with the added advantage of being 100% natural.

What are the different stages in harvesting honey?

Honey can be harvested between late spring and September, depending on the region and the type of honey. We went to meet Cédric, a beekeeper from Marseille! They explain the different stages of the harvest.

Its virtues in cosmetics

Honey is renowned for its moisturizing qualities. Its oily texture binds and retains water molecules, preventing evaporation. The reason for this? Its pH is very close to that of the epidermis, so it preserves our hydrolipidic film and helps protect the skin from external aggressions (temperature variations, pollution, UV rays, etc.).

Sugar, present in over 80% of its composition, softens the skin. Minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus), vitamins (C, K, B group), trace elements (iron, copper, manganese, zinc) and amino acids have a soothing and repairing effect on the skin.

Honey also has detoxifying and purifying properties, enabling deep cleansing of the skin. The anti-oxidants it contains combat the effects of aging, making it an excellent anti-aging ingredient. These molecules, such as phenolic and flavoid compounds, trap free radicals generated by the body, and respond to environmental aggressions that promote cellular aging.

For which skin type?

Honey is suitable for all skin types thanks to its strong moisturizing and healing properties. For skin that's dry, sensitive, dehydrated, unbalanced or stressed, honey will comfort you! It also improves acne and eczema problems. However, we would advise atopic skin sufferers to beware of those allergic to pollen. Some products can cause irritation.

We favor integrated and organic farming, as is currently the case with the organic honey used in the formulation of our products in our collection at Regenerating Honey, harvested in Haute-Provence. Sustainable agriculture is an agricultural production system whose main objective is to optimize the economic result by controlling the quantities of inputs, such as chemical substances used (pesticides and fertilizers, for example) in order to limit their impact on the environment. Panier des Sens supports local beekeeping production by joining forces with a network of local producers!
